One of boxing's eight traditional weight divisions, flyweight, was the last to be created. No matter how small the boxer was, anyone below featherweight was referred to as a bantamweight before 1909. Flyweight is a boxing weight class that includes fighters weighing more than 49 kg (108 lb) but less than 51 kg (112 lb).

Famous flyweight winners throughout history include Jimmy Wilde, Pancho Villa, Masahiko Karada, Miguel Canto, Charlie Magri, Gabriel Bernal, Hilaria Zapata, Mark Johnson, Yuri Darchinyan, and Roman Gonzalez. With 17 title defenses, Thai boxer Pongsaklek Wongjongkam has the longest reign.

History of the Flyweight Class in Pro Boxing

The National Sporting Club (NSC) first established the flyweight division in 1909 with a weight limit of 112 lb (50.80 kg), and the Walker Law, which was put into place in 1920, also formally recognized it. The National Boxing Association (NBA) and the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) subsequently acknowledged it in 1927.

Sid Smith was named the first flyweight champion of the world in a fight held in 1911. The first boxer to be acknowledged as a flyweight champion in both Britain and the United States was Jimmy Wilde, who held the title from 1916 to 1923.

Masahiko Harada, who won the WBA world flyweight championship in 1962 by defeating Pone Kingpetch, became the first flyweight champion in modern history. The IBF followed suit in 1983, and the WBO, like most of their titles, did so in 1989. The WBC first introduced a flyweight version of their title in 1990.
