There are many NASCAR drivers who have defined entire decades through their performance in the sport. NASCAR Cup Series is the ultimate proving ground of American racing and the drivers that compete in it give everything they have to win the title. NASCAR Cup Series in 2023 was won by Ryan Blaney, who was driving for Team Penske in their Ford Mustang Dark Horse.

In 2023, NASCAR released the list of the 75 Greatest Drivers in the sport of all time. This list included the best drivers in the sport throughout its history. Among these drivers, many had unique records attached to them and many had dominated the sport in the era. Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty made the top of the list with their seven championship titles and multiple “Crown Jewel” victories.

Oldest active NASCAR Cup Driver

Martin Truex Jr. is the oldest NASCAR driver actively competing in the Cup Series after Kevin Harvick’s retirement in the previous season. He is 43 years old, as of March, 2024. He is only four months older than fellow 43 year old driver, Denny Hamlin. Truex Jr. is carrying forward NASCAR’s legacy as the elder of the sport. He was also included in the list of the 75 Greatest drivers in 2023.

Martin Truex Jr. may be the oldest driver in the sport currently but he is no stranger to success in the sport. He won the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series and he was the Regular Season champion in 2023 with the best bid for winning the championship in that season. Truex Jr. has accumulated 34 victories, 284 Top-10s and 23 pole positions in the Cup Series.

He has been racing in NASCAR for well over 20 years and has 663 race starts to his name. Martin Truex Jr. will be racing for Joe Gibbs Racing in the no. 19 Toyota Camry XSE in the 2024 season. Martin Truex Jr. leads the NASCAR championship standings going into the Toyota Owners 400 race to be held on March 31st.

Truex Jr. by no means is the oldest driver to have ever competed in the sport of NASCAR. Herschel McGriff is the oldest known driver to have competed in NASCAR. He was 90 years old at the time he last competed in the sport.
