The Indianapolis Colts are sitting on a record of 3 - 5 - 1 nine games into the 2022-2023 NFL season. The team recently fired head coach Frank Reich after four and a half seasons. To make matters worse, team general manager Chris Ballard didn't make the situation any better after his recent comments about the team.

In a press conference announcing former Colts player Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach, Ballard shared his thoughts on the state of the franchise.

Ballard said:

"Y'all been kicking the s**t out of me for not drafting wideouts and now we're underperforming on the offensive line." - via Andrew Siciliano

Ballard's comments didn't go over well, with NFL fans taking to Twitter to go after the general manager. Many fans say that Ballard needs to take accountability for Indianapolis' struggles:

Other fans simply want Ballard fired after hearing his comments:

A look at Chris Ballard as Colts general manager

Ballard was hired by Colts owner Jim Irsay to be the team's general manager in 2017. He drafted notable players in safety Malik Hooker in the first round and running back Marlin Mack in the fourth round of his first-ever draft. In the 2018 NFL Draft, Ballard drafted a pair of three-time All-Pro players with the Colts' first two picks.

He selected offensive guard Quenton Nelson in the first round and linebacker Shaquille Leonard in the second round. He also selected running back Nyhiem Hines in the fourth round of that draft. Ballard traded Hines to the Buffalo Bills this season.

Ballard missed out on wide receiver Deebo Samuel as he drafted cornerback Rock Ya-Sin two picks ahead of Samuel in the 2019 draft. The San Francisco 49ers drafted Samuel two spots later. Ballard found success with his first draft picks in the 2020 draft. He drafted receiver Michael Pittman Jr. out of USC and All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor in the second round.

In last year's draft, he selected quarterback Sam Ehlinger out of Texas. Ehlinger replaced 2016 NFL MVP Matt Ryan as the team's starter this season. Ballard is in his sixth season as the Colts' general manager as the team made the playoffs in two of the previous five seasons.

Given Reich's firing, the question is, will Ballard find himself out after failed expectations of deeper playoff success?

We'll see as Ballard seems safe in Indianapolis for the time being.
