Allison Schmitt: A Brief Biography
Allison Schmitt is an American female swimmer born on 7th June 1990. She hails from Canton in Michigan, United States. Allison is a Freestyle specialist and represents the USA in 200m and 400m Freestyles.
Background:
Allison Schmitt was born to Ralph Schmitt and Gail Schmitt. Her father is a financial analyst and her mother is a project manager. She has three sisters, Kirsten, Kari, and Sarah, and a brother Derek Schmitt.
Allison began to take up swimming at the young age of 8. She attended Canton Charter Academy and later moved to Canton High School for high school education. At the age of 10, Allison joined Ann Arbor Swim Club, where she trained under Josh Morgan for three years. During the senior year of her high school, she came under the guidance of Club Wolverine coach Bob Bowman.
In 2008, after graduating from high school, Allison joined the University of Georgia and became a member of the Georgia Bulldogs swimming team, where she was trained by Jack Bauerle. She had represented them at the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming Championships (2008-2011).
In 2012, Allison moved to North Baltimore Aquatic Club with her coach Bob Bowman to train under him. The following year, she graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Psychology. She currently trains with Bob Bowman at NBAC.
Rise to Glory:
Allison received her first career break in 2009 when she won the NCAA title in 50m Freestyle at the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming Championships. The following year, she took home her first national title in 200m Freestyle and a Silver medal in 400m Freestyle at the USA National Swimming Championships.
Allison bagged two consecutive NCAA titles in 50m Freestyle (2010 and 2011) and a 200m Freestyle title (2010). In 2012, she won the 200m and 400m Freestyles at the US Olympic Trials and qualified for the London Olympics. The following year, Allison won her national title in 200m Freestyle and a Silver in 100m Freestyle.
Between 2014 and 2019, Allison had won six national championships medals, including 4 titles in 200m Freestyle (3) and 100m Freestyle (1). She holds a national record in 200m Freestyle.
Major Achievements:
Allison Schmitt made her international debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she won a Bronze medal in 4x200m Freestyle. In 2009, she won two Silver medals in 200m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships. The following year, Allison clinched two Gold medals in 200m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle.
At the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, Allison won a Gold in 4x200m Freestyle. In 2012, she bagged three titles in 200m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 4x200m Freestyle at the World Swimming Championships. That year, at the London Olympics, Allison took home three Gold medals in 200m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 4x100m Medley, a Silver in 400m Freestyle, and a Bronze medal in 4x100m Freestyle.
In 2015, Allison clinched three Gold medals in 200m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 4x100m Medley and a Silver in 4x100m Freestyle at the Pan American Games. The following year, she won a Gold medal and a Silver in 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle respectively at the Rio Olympics.
In 2018, Allison Schmitt won the Silver medal in 4x200m Freestyle. At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, she won two Silver medals in 4x100m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle.
Allison Schmitt will look to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via US Olympic Trials and shall be in contention to medal in 200m and 400m Freestyles.
