Cate Campbell: A Brief Biography
Cate Campbell is an Australian woman swimmer born on 20th May 1992. She hails from Brisbane city of Queensland in Australia. Cate is a Freestyle specialist and represents Australia in 100m Freestyle.
Background:
Cate Campbell was born to Eric Campbell and Jenny Campbell. She is of South African descent born and raised in Blantyre, Malawi. Her father is an accountant and her mother is a nurse. Cate is the eldest among 5 siblings. Her young sister, Bronte Campbell is also a professional swimmer and an Olympic Gold-medalist.
Cate was introduced to swimming by her mother, Jenny, at a young age. She and her siblings were home schooled as children. In 2001, Cate and her entire family left Malawi and migrated to Australia, and have been residing in Brisbane since then. She attended Kenmore State High School, where she began to take up competitive swimming.
In 2011, after graduating from high school, Cate joined the Queensland University of Technology, where she is pursuing a degree in Mass Communication. She is a member of the QUT Elite Athlete Program. She currently trains with Commercial Swimming Club, whom she has been representing at Australian Swimming Championships since 2014.
Rise to Glory:
Cate Campbell broke into the national scene in 2008 when she won two Silver medals in 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle at the Australian Swimming Championships and qualified for debut Olympics at the Beijing Olympics. In 2010, she lost a Silver medal to Alice Mills by 0.02 seconds and took home Bronze in 50m Freestyle at the national championships.
In 2011, Cate won the Gold medal and a Silver in 4x100m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China. The following year, she won her first national title in 50m Freestyle and a Silver medal in 100m Freestyle at the Australian Swimming Championships.
Since 2012, Cate Campbell has won 16 national championships medals, including 12 Gold in 50m Freestyle (6) and 100m Freestyle (6), three Silver medals in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, and 4x100m Freestyle and a Bronze in 50m Butterfly.
Cate Campbell holds national Long Course records in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, 4x100m Mixed Medley, and Short Course records in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 4x100m Medley.
Major Achievements:
Cate Campbell received her first international break at the age of 16 when she won two Bronze medals in 50m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2009, she took home 50m Freestyle Bronze at the World Aquatics Championships.
In 2012, Cate appeared in her second Olympics and won the Gold medal in 4x100m Freestyle at the London Olympics. She also competed in 50m Freestyle but finished 10th in the semifinals and thus failed to qualify for the final. At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Cate clinched three Gold medals in 100m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 4x100m Medley, and a Silver in 50m Freestyle.
Between 2013 and 2019, Cate Campbell had won four World Aquatics titles in 100m Freestyle (2013), 4x100m Freestyle (2015 and 2019), and 4x100m Mixed Medley (2019), four Silver medals in 50m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle (2013), 4x100m Medley (2013 and 2019), and 100m Freestyle (2019), and two Bronze in 50m Freestyle (2019) and 100m Freestyle (2015).
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Cate was a part of the Australian women’s team that won a Gold medal in 4x100m Freestyle and a Silver in 4x100m Medley. In 100m Freestyle, she finished 6th in the final. In 2018, Cate took home three Gold medals in 50m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly, and 4x100m Freestyle, and a Silver in 100m Freestyle at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Cate Campbell will look to qualify for her fourth Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via Olympic Trials and shall be in contention to win a medal in 100m Freestyle.
