Early Life and Career
Don'Tale O'Neil Mayes was raised in Kentucky and began practicing martial arts as a way to control his aggression. He started with judo and eventually transitioned to other disciplines. Mayes won state championships in Kansas and Indiana while practicing judo. He attended Ancilla College but did not graduate with a degree.
Don'Tale Mayes had an unbeaten record of 8-0 as an amateur fighter from 2014 to 2015. He then turned professional and won the Hoosier FC Heavyweight Championship in his second fight, with a record of 3-1. Mayes was invited to participate in Dana White's Contender Series 8 and faced Allen Crowder, but lost in the third round due to technical knockout. Mayes made two more appearances on the Contender Series and won both fights by stoppage, finally earning his UFC contract on his second try.
Don’Tale Mayes’ Career in UFC
Mayes started his UFC career with a loss to Ciryl Gane on October 26, 2019, at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Askren. He lost the fight via a heel hook submission in the third round.
Mayes returned to the octagon on May 16, 2020, at UFC on ESPN: Overeem vs. Harris, where he faced Rodrigo Nascimento. Unfortunately, he suffered his second straight loss in the UFC, losing the fight via a rear-naked choke submission in the second round.
However, Mayes got his first victory in the UFC when he faced Roque Martinez on November 14, 2020, at UFC Fight Night: Felder vs. dos Anjos. He won the fight via a unanimous decision, with judges scoring the bout 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in his favor.
Mayes was scheduled to fight Tai Tuivasa on March 20, 2021, at UFC on ESPN: Brunson vs. Holland, but he was removed from the bout due to undisclosed reasons. He was replaced by promotional newcomer Harry Hunsucker.
Mayes returned to the octagon on December 18, 2021, at UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Daukaus. He faced Josh Parisian and won the bout via TKO due to elbows from the crucifix position in the third round.
Mayes was scheduled to face Justin Tafa on July 30, 2022, at UFC 277. However, Tafa pulled out due to undisclosed reasons, and Mayes was matched with promotional newcomer Hamdy Abdelwahab. Mayes lost the fight via split decision, but it was later ruled a no contest after Abdelwahab failed to disclose his history of using Methenolone before joining the UFC and tested positive for the drug thereafter.
Mayes is set to return to the octagon on February 25, 2023, at UFC Fight Night 220, where he will face Augusto Sakai.
