Emily Seebohm: A Brief Biography

Emily Seebohm is an Australian woman swimmer born on 5th June 1992. She hails from Brisbane city of Queensland in Australia. Emily is a backstroke specialist and represents Australia internationally in 100m and 200m Backstroke events.

Background:

Emily Seebohm was born to John Seebohm and Karen Seebohm. Her father is a former footballer who played for Glenelg Tigers and her mother is a swimming coach.

Emily Seebohm pursued her interest in swimming at a young age. She attended St.Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and later moved to St. Margaret Anglican School Girls in Ascot, Brisbane before transferring to St John Fisher College, where she had completed her 10th grade. While at school, Emily won the 50m Backstroke at the 2008 Brisbane Catholic School Girls Championships.

In 2009, Emily was conferred with the Medal of the Order of Australia by the Australian Government for her service to the nation. She currently trains with the Brisbane Grammar School swimming club under the tutelage of David Lush. Emily is also a fitness trainer by profession and working as Master Trainer at the Australian Institute of Fitness in Queensland.

Rise to Glory:

Emily Seebohm received her first career break at the age of 14 when she won the 100m Backstroke and 4x100m Medley Gold at the 2007 Australian Swimming Championships and qualified for the World Aquatics Championships. That year, she won the Gold medals in 100m Backstroke and 4x100m Medley at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

In 2010, Emily took home three Gold medals in 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, and 100m Backstroke, a Silver in 200m Individual Medley and two Bronze in 200m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly at the Australian Swimming Championships. Between 2011 and 2019, she won 25 national championships medals.

Emily Seebohm national records in 50m Backstroke, 100m Backstroke, 4x100m Medley, 4x50m Freestyle, 4x50m Medley, and 4x100m Medley. She was a member of the Australian Olympic Team for 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, 2016 Rio Olympics.

Major Achievements:

Emily Seebohm made her world debut at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships, where she won the Gold medal in the 4x100m Medley. In 2008, she debuted in the Olympics and won the 4x100m Medley Gold at the Beijing Olympics.

In 2009, Emily took home the Silver medal and a Bronze in 4x100m Medley and 100m Backstroke respectively at the World Aquatics Championships. She went on to win three World Aquatics titles in 100m Backstroke, 200m Backstroke, and 4x100m Freestyle (2015), four Silver in 100m Backstroke (2013), 4x100m Freestyle (2013 and 2017), and 4x100m Medley (2013) and three Bronze medals in 100m Backstroke (2017) and 4x100m Medley (2015 and 2017).

In 2012, Emily took home 4x100m Freestyle Gold and two Silver medals in 100m Backstroke and 4x100m Medley at the London Olympics. Between 2014 and 2018, Emily had won five Silver medals in 50m, 100m, 200m Backstroke, 4x100m Medley (2014), and 100m Medley (2016) and as many Bronze in 100m Medley (2014), 200m Backstroke (2016 and 2018), 4x100m Medley (2016), and 4x50m Freestyle (2018) at the World Swimming Championships.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she won the Silver medal in the 4x100m Medley. At the Commonwealth Games, Emily Seebohm won an accumulated 15 medals, that includes 7 Gold medals in 100m Backstroke (2010 and 2014), 4x100m Medley (2010, 2014, and 2018), 4x100m Freestyle (2010), and 50m Backstroke (2018), 4 Silver in 100m Freestyle, 200m Medley (2010), 200m Backstroke (2014), and 100m Backstroke (2018), and 4 Bronze medals in 50m, 100m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly (2010), and 200m Backstroke (2018).

Emily Seebohm will look to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via Olympic Trials and shall be in contention to win a medal in 100m and 200m Backstroke.
