James Guy: A Brief Biography

James Guy is a British swimmer born on 26th November 1995. He is a native of Bury in Greater Manchester, England. James specializes in Freestyle and Butterfly and represents Great Britain and England in 100m and 200m Freestyle and Butterfly.

Background:

James Guy was born to Andrew Guy and Cath Guy. He was born and raised in Bury city of Greater Manchester. He has an elder brother Luke Guy, who is a swimming expert and currently runs a swimming club called Crewe Flyers.

James was introduced to swimming at a very young age. He attended Forest Preparatory School in Trafford, Greater Manchester. James was a member of Trafford Metros' swimming club before moving to Somerset, where he joined Millfield School on a swimming scholarship. The Millfield School has a reputation for producing world-class British swimmers.

In 2017, he began to train at the National Swimming Centre of the University of Bath under the tutelage of David McNulty.

Rise to Glory:

James Guy got his first international break in 2012 when he won the Bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle at the European Junior Swimming Championships. The following year, he helped his GB team to clinch the Gold medal in 4x200m Freestyle, while James won two Silver medals in 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle.

At the 2013 European Junior Swimming Championships, James won his first international title in 200m Freestyle, followed by another title in 400m Freestyle. In 2014, he bagged a hat-trick of Gold medals in 200m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, and 200m Butterfly at the British Swimming Championships.

James Guy has an accumulation of 15 national titles in 200m Freestyle (4), 400m Freestyle (4), 100m Butterfly (4), 200m Butterfly (3) under his belt. He holds national records for 400m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly.

Major Achievements:

James Guy made his senior international debut at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, where he finished 5th in 400m Freestyle and 7th in 4x200m Freestyle Relay. In 2014, he clinched the Gold medal in 4x100m Medley and a Bronze in 400m Freestyle at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. That year, in December, James won the Silver medal in 400m Freestyle at the World Swimming Championships.

In 2015, James bagged two Gold medals in 200m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle, and a Silver in 400m Freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships. He went on to win two World Aquatics titles in 4x200 Freestyle (2017) and 4x100m Medley (2019), a Silver in 4x100m Medley (2017), and two Bronze medals in 100m Butterfly (2017) and 4x100m Mixed Medley (2019).

James Guy made his Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he won two Silver medals in 4x100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley. In 2018, he won five medals at the Commonwealth Games, including 4 Silver medals in 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle, and 4x100m Medley, and a Bronze in 400m Freestyle.

At the European Aquatics Championships, James took home 4 Gold medals in 4x100m Medley (2016 and 2018), 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Mixed Medley (2018), and two Bronze medals in 200m Freestyle (2016) and 100m Butterfly (2018). In 2019, he won a Silver medal and a Bronze in 4x50m Mixed Freestyle and 200m Butterfly respectively at the European Swimming Championships.

In April 2021, James Guy made it to the Great Britain Olympic Team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via British Olympic Selection Trials and he will compete in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Butterfly events.
