James Marshall: A Brief Biography
James Marshall Biography
James Marshall is a former New Zealand top order batsman. He was a right-hand batsman and a right arm medium pacer. James is the identical twin brother of another retired Kiwi player Hamish Marshall.
He represented the Kiwis for a short stint but garnered huge success and popularity in domestic cricket playing for the Northern Districts for 16-years.
Background
James was born on 15 February 1979 in Auckland, New Zealand. He made his first-class debut for the Northern Districts in 1997 against the Central Districts.
Debut
Marshall made his ODI debut against Australia in February 2005 where he made 14 runs. His brother top scored for the Kiwis with a score of 55 in the match.
His Test debut came a month later against the Aussies in Auckland. In doing so, he and Hamish became the second pair of twins to play in the same Test, although he made trivial scores of 29 and 3 in the first and second innings respectively.
He was a part of the first batch of Kiwi cricketers to play T20 as he made his T20 debut against South Africa in the second ever T20 international ever played by New Zealand.
Rise to Glory
James was included in the Kiwi squad because he showed huge potential in the domestic level. He played consistently well and his technique was a major deciding factor for his inclusion.
His international career was a damp squib as compared to his illustrious domestic career where he won four domestic One Day Trophies and four Plunkett Shields with Northern Districts.
Low Points
Marshall’s international career could never take off. He himself confessed that he wished his international career could have been a bit better.
He could only score one half century in the seven Tests he played and put under par performances in ODIs so he was dropped. However, his last taste of international cricket was a brilliant 161 against Ireland.
Club Career
Marshall played his entire club career for Northern Districts and is a club legend. He has 7422 first class runs and 3755 one day runs in his 16-year stint with the ND, which he ended in 2013. He was also a long serving club captain.
Records
Marshall made 161 in his final ODI match against Ireland which is the highest score by a player playing his last ODI.
Having played 126 Plunket Shield matches, he holds a record for most first-class appearances by a domestic player for a single province in New Zealand.
