One of the most promising athletes on the tennis circuit, Joao Fonseca, is gaining attention worldwide with his exemplary performance in 2025. The teenage sensation advanced to his maiden Grand Slam second round at the Australian Open. He created the biggest upset by eliminating top seed Andrey Rublev in the first round at the age of 18 years, five months, and six days. Growing up by attending all editions of the Rio de Janeiro tournament as a fan, Fonseca started playing tennis when he was four. He used to play tennis at the Rio de Janeiro Country Club, located near his home. Fonseca advanced to the final of the 2023 Australian Open junior in the boys' doubles category alongside Alexander Blockx. He is the winner of the 2023 US Open junior title, having defeated Learner Tien in the final.
