One of the most promising athletes on the tennis circuit, Joao Fonseca, is gaining attention worldwide with his exemplary performance in 2025. The teenage sensation advanced to his maiden Grand Slam second round at the Australian Open. He created the biggest upset by eliminating top seed Andrey Rublev in the first round at the age of 18 years, five months, and six days. His success continued as he lifted his maiden singles title at the 2025 Argentina Open, registering a win over Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.

Growing up by attending all editions of the Rio de Janeiro tournament as a fan, Fonseca started playing tennis when he was four. He used to play tennis at the Rio de Janeiro Country Club, located near his home. According to the ATP official website, he shared watching professional tennis players motivated him to pursue tennis as a career.

Fonseca advanced to the final of the 2023 Australian Open junior in the boys' doubles category alongside Alexander Blockx. He is the winner of the 2023 US Open junior title, having defeated Learner Tien in the final. He became the first player from Brazil to end the season as No. 1 at the age of 17 in the ITF junior ranking. Fonseca registered his first ATP victory against Arthur Fils in straight sets at the 2024 Rio Open.

Fonseca was born to Roberto and Christiano Fonseca on August 21, 2006, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While giving an interview with Tennis365, Fonseca said that his parents encouraged him to try different sports such as tennis, soccer and surfing. Roberto Fonseca is the co-founder and CEO of the first hedge fund company named IP Capital Partners. During his interview with ATPTour.com, Fonseca said that his father is responsible for improving his skills by playing the net. He shared, "My dad would play a match to 10, and it would be 9/3, and he would make it 9/9, and then sometimes he made me win, and other times he would make it 11/9, a win for him. And I cried, I remember."
