Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden is the most successful American driver in the IndyCar series. Newgarden drives for Team Penske in the IndyCar series. He has won the Indy 500 race twice in his career and is the first driver since Helio Castroneves to win the Indy 500 race in consecutive years from 2023 to 2024. Newgarden is the 2017 and 2019 IndyCar series champion. He has raced in multiple disciplines of motorsports including, Indy Lights, GP3 series, Formula Ford and Sportscar Championship. Newgarden also won the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona becoming the 16th driver to claim victory in both the Indy 500 and 24 Hours of Daytona.

Josef Newgarden is a native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, in the United States. He is the record holder for the most laps led by a race winner in IndyCar. He claimed the record in 2016 at the Iowa Speedway. Newgarden is married to Ashley Newgarden. The couple has one son named Kota Nicolai Newgarden. Josef Newgarden is famous for his pitlane weaving maneuver which allowed him to win the 2023 Indy 500. IndyCar has since banned the move in races.

Josef Newgarden's Early Life & Career

Josef Newgarden started racing in 2001 competing in various events across the country. He started karting at 13 but focused on regional championships to gather funding. He finished runner-up in 2005 at the Kart Racers of America (KRA) Junior Can Championship. Newgarden won the TAG world championship in the junior division claiming the title. In 2006, he won both the KRA Junior Can division championship and the TAG world championship.

Newgarden started open-wheel racing in 2006 with the Skip Barber Racing School series, finishing second in the Southern Regional Championship Series. He switched to BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda championship in 2007 and 2008. Newgarden finished sixth and second in the championship in the two years, respectively. Newgarden was selected for the USA Team Scholarship to compete in the Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy in 2008. He secured the victory in the Formula Ford Festival becoming the only American to do so. Josef Newgarden moved to England in 2009 to compete in the British Formula Ford series. He also raced in the GP3 series in 2010 with Carlin Motorsports but could not make his mark. Newgarden joined Indy Lights in 2011. He was able to shine in the competition breaking milestones and securing the championship title with one race left.

Josef joined the IndyCar series in 2013 debuting with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. After a few unimpressive seasons with a best finish of 13th, Newgarden switched through CFH Racing and Ed Carpenter racing before joining Team Penske. He clinched his first title in his debut season with Team Penske. Newgarden has participated in 215 races as of November 2024, claiming 31 wins and 58 podium finishes.
