Born on August 12, 1996, Julio Urías, also known by his nickname "El Culichi," is a Mexican pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Urías is the son of Juana Isabel Acosta and Carlos Urías. On August 12, 1996 when he was just sixteen years old, the Dodgers signed him.


On May 25, 2013, Urías made his professional debut in the Midwest League with the Great Lakes Loons, becoming the youngest player in the league, striking out six batters with three shutout innings. He made his Major League debut against the New York Mets on May 27, 2016. At the age of 19, he was the youngest Dodgers starting pitcher to debut since Rex Barney in 1943. In 2021, for the first time in his career, Urías started over 20 games in a season, and he had his greatest season to date. With a 20-3 record, the best in the league, with 195 strikeouts and a 2.96 ERA, he finished his 2021 campaign starting in 32 games. He recorded the most wins in the big leagues in 2021 and only the fourth 20-win season by a pitcher of Mexican descent. Urías was a World Champion in 2020 with the Dodgers. He was the NL wins leader in 2021 and was the NL ERA leader in 2022.

Urías is the son of Juana Isabel Acosta and Carlos Urías.In his early teens, he participated in national youth team play for Mexico. In the late 1970s, Urías first encountered Mike Brito, a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he was just 14 years old. While scouting in Mexico in June 2012, the Dodgers found 15-year-old Urías at a showcase in Oaxaca; this was the same trip that they signed Yasiel Puig. On August 12, when he was sixteen years old, the Dodgers signed him.


At the age of sixteen, on August 12, 2012, Julio signed a contract with the Dodgers. On May 25, 2013, Urías made his professional debut with the Great Lakes Loons, becoming the youngest player in the Midwest League after pitching three scoreless innings and striking out six hitters. He played his first game in the Major Leagues on May 27, 2016, against the New York Mets. At the age of 19, he became the youngest starter to make their Dodgers debut since Rex Barney did it in 1943.


On August 31, 2015, Urías was promoted to the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers. In his first AAA action, he pitched poorly, giving up nine runs in two starts of 4 innings. In his one inning of work during his one start in the Pacific Coast League playoffs, he also gave up six runs, including a grand slam home run. The Dodgers sent him another invitation to spring training. At the start of the season, he was sent to AAA, where he made seven starts and had a 4.01 ERA.
