Michael Mason Biography
Michael James Mason is a former New Zealand cricketer who was born in Carterton. Being a right-arm fast-medium, the right-handed batsman usually comes to the crease deep in the order.
Background
He made his first-class debut in 1997/98 and is often known for his work rate on the field throughout his career. He played for Central District in the New Zealand domestic cricket.
Debut
He made his ODI debut against Pakistan at Lahore on 29th November 2003. He was the 133rd player to be capped for the Kiwis.
He made debut in the longest format of the game against South Africa at Wellington between March 26th to 30th of 2004. He failed to take any wicket and scored just three runs in both the innings as visitors won the match and leveled the series.
He made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka at Auckland on December 26th, 2006 where he scalped a wicket and conceded 19 runs in his 3 overs.
Rise to Glory
He was once described by John Bracewell as "the best line-and-length bowler in the country" and when he finally strung a few ODIs together, against Sri Lanka in 2006-07, he showed glimpses of that skill.
Michael Mason was part of the New Zealand squad for the tour of England in 2008. He took 3 wickets against Essex and was 12th man against England Lions.
Retirement
Mason was not a regular part of the national team and was often seen playing domestic cricket for Central Districts.
He bid goodbye to his cricketing career at the age of 37, in 2012 after helping Central Districts grab a win against Auckland.
