Mitch Larkin: A Brief Biography
Mitchell Larkin is an Australian swimmer born on 9th July 1993. He is a native of Buderim city of Queensland in Australia. Mitch is a Backstroke specialist and represents Australia in 100m and 200m Backstroke events internationally.
Background
Mitch Larkin was born to Peter Larkin and Judy Larkin. He was born and brought up in Buderim city in Queensland.
Mitch picked up an interest in swimming at a very young age. He joined the St. Peters Western swimming club, where he received his first swimming lessons. Mitch attended the Brisbane Grammar School. In 2008, after graduating from high school, he joined John Paul College.
Mitch Larkin left St. Peters Western swimming club to join the Coli Condors, where he trained under Dean Boxell. In 2016, he completed his graduation in a Bachelor of Property Economics and Business from the Queensland University of Technology.
Mitch continues to train with Dean Boxell. He is currently working with Trilogy Funds in Brisbane as an Assistant Property Analyst.
Rise to Glory
Mitch Larkin got his first international break at the 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, where he won 400m Individual Medley title, a Silver in 200m Individual Medley, and a Bronze in 200m Backstroke.
In 2011, Mitch clinched his first senior national title in 200m Individual Medley, along with two Silver medals in 200m Backstroke and 400m Individual Medley at the Australian Swimming Championships.
Between 2012 and 2019, Mitch had bagged 23 national championships medals, including 16 Gold medals in 200m Backstroke (5), 100m Backstroke (4), one each in 50m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley, 400m Individual Medley, 4x100m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle, 4x100m Medley and 4x100m Mixed Medley.
In 2016, Mitch Larkin holds the world record for 200m Backstroke and two national records for 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley.
Major Achievements
Mitch Larkin made his senior international debut at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, where he finished 23rd in 200m Backstroke heats, 34th in 200m Individual Medley heats, and 25th in 400m Individual Medley heats. In 2012, he made his Olympic debut at the London Olympics and finished 8th in the 200m Backstroke final.
In 2014, Mitch received his major international career break after he won a Gold medal in 200m Backstroke and three Silver in 100m Backstroke, 50m Backstroke, and 4x100m Medley at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Mitch Larkin made his second Olympic appearance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he took home a Silver medal in 200m Backstroke and a Bronze in 4x100m Medley. At the World Swimming Championships, he had bagged two Gold medals in 100m Backstroke (2014 and 2016), a Silver in 4x100m Medley, and two Bronze medals in 200m Backstroke (2016 and 2018).
At the World Aquatics Championships, Mitch had won three titles in 100m and 200m Backstroke (2015) and 4x100m Medley (2019), two Silver medals in 4x100m Medley (2015) and 4x100m Mixed Medley (2017), and a Bronze in 100m Backstroke (2019). In 2018, at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, he swept five Gold medals in 50m, 100m, 200m Backstroke, 200m Medley, and 4x100m Medley.
Mitch Larkin will look to appear in his third Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and shall be in contention to win a medal in 100m and 200m Backstroke events.
