Nathan Adrian: A Brief Biography

Nathan Adrian is an American swimmer born on 7th December 1988. He is a native of Bremerton city of Washington in the United States. Nathan is a Freestyle specialist and represents the USA in 100m Freestyle.

Background:

Nathan Adrian was born to Jim Adrian and Cecilia Adrian. His mother is originally from Hong Kong and worked as a nurse in Bremerton School District and his father is a retired nuclear engineer.

Nathan started swimming at the very young age of 2. Three years later, at the age of 5, he began to take up competitive swimming by joining the Olympic Aquatic Club. Later, Nathan moved to Tacoma Swim Club. While studying at Bremerton High School, he emerged as a successful high school swimmer with state titles in 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle and had also shattered every individual record of high school.

In 2006, after graduating from high school, Nathan joined the University of California in Berkeley, where he trained under Dave Durden of California Golden Bears. He had represented his college team at the NCAA Championships.

In 2011, Nathan Adrian graduated with Honours in Public Health from the University of California.

Rise to Glory:

Nathan Adrian received his career breakthrough in 2009 when he won two Gold medals in 100 y Freestyle and 50 y Freestyle, a Silver medal in 4x50 y Medley, and two Bronze in 4xx0y Freestyle and 4x100 y Freestyle at the NCAA Division 1 Swimming Championships. That year, he won two senior national titles in 50 y Freestyle, 100 y Freestyle at the US National Swimming Championships.

In 2010, Nathan defended his national titles in 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle. That year, he defended his NCAA 100 y Freestyle title along with winning 3 titles in 4x50 yd Freestyle, 4x100 y Freestyle, and 4x100 y Medley.

At the 2011 NCAA Division 1 Swimming Championships, Nathan had a successful campaign by clinching 5 titles in 100 y Freestyle, 50 y Freestyle, 4x100 y Freestyle, 4x50 y Medley, and 4x100 y Medley. In 2013, he won the 200m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle titles at the US National Swimming Championships. Nathan would go on to win three more national titles in 100m Freestyle (2017 and 2018) and 200m Freestyle (2018).

Major Achievements:

Nathan Adrian got his major international break in 2008 when he won two Gold medals in 100m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle and a Silver medal in 4x100m Medley at the World Swimming Championships. That year, he made his Olympic debut at the Beijing Olympics and won the Gold medal in 4x100m Freestyle.

In 2009, Nathan won the Gold medal double in 4x100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley at the World Aquatics Championships. Between 2011 and 2019, he had won 8 World Aquatics titles in 4x100m Medley (3), 4x100m Freestyle (2), and 4x100m Mixed Freestyle (3), four Silver medals in 100m Freestyle, 50m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley, and two Bronze medals in 100m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Nathan became Olympic Champion in 100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley and won Silver medal in 4x100m Freestyle. Four years later, in 2016, he helped his US Medley team to defend the 4x100m Medley title, while he won two Bronze medals in 100m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle at the Rio Olympics.

In 2019, Nathan Adrian won two Gold medals in 4x100m Medley and 4x100m Mixed Freestyle and three Silver medals in 100m Freestyle, 50m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle at the Pan American Games.

Nathan Adrian will look to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via US Olympic Qualifiers and shall be one of the strong contenders to win Olympic Gold in 100m Freestyle.
