Peter Manuel: A Brief Biography
Peter Manuel was a former cricket umpire from Sri Lanka. Born on 18 November 1950, the former right handed batsman is currently a part of the Panel of ICC Umpire Coaches.
Considered as one of the most prominent figures in the umpiring world, Manuel’s career was however laden with umpteen controversies.
Early days
A batsman by nature, Manuel has represented Sri Lanka in both One day international as well as test matches. His test career began against subcontinent rivals India in Colombo and it ended against Zimbabwe on the same venue. Peter made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo as well while his last One day international came against Australia at Dambulla.
Umpiring career
Peter Manuel’s umpiring career began in 1992 in a One day international match. He was given the opportunity of umpiring in a test match in 1993. Currently 67 years of age, Manuel stood in eleven test matches between 1993 and 2001 and 45 one day internationals between 1992 and 2004.
In 2008, Manuel was appointed by ICC as one of the five regional umpires’ performance managers. The aim of this appointment was to work for the development of umpiring in the region.
Peter was also involved with the Asian Cricket council as a resource person for developing umpires in the Asia region.
Controversies
Peter Manuel along with A V Jayaprakash were the umpires in the test series in England's tour of Pakistan in 2001. This series is considered as the epitome of umpiring mishaps as during the first test match, 8 England players were given out lbw but TV replays indicated that 7 of them were wrong. Both the umpires were criticized heavily on account of their inferior umpiring.
Peter Manuel was a part of the envoy which was attacked by 12 gunmen near Gaddafi stadium in Pakistan during Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan in 2009. Manuel came out through the incident unscraped, however six members of the Sri Lankan national team were injured.
Retirement
Peter Manuel stood as an umpire for the last time in a One day international in 2004. Manuel currently works as the Umpire coach for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
