Randy Vasquez’s Early Life

Randy Vasquez was born and raised in Navarette, Dominican Republic, a town in the northwest part of the country with a lot of crime. He stated as a child, he used to play “Vitilla” a very popular form of baseball in the country in which broomsticks are used as bats and bottle caps are used as balls. His pitching skills with bottle caps earned him the nickname “cuchilito” from his friends, which means “the knife”.

Initially, Vasquez wanted to be a catcher in baseball, so he made a ball from rags and black tape and whipped it hard against a concrete wall for two consecutive weeks. He caught the attention of Arturo Pena, a scout for the New York Yankees, who recognized his potential as a pitcher. So he told him that he had no future in the majors as a catcher or a hitter. However, he advised Vasquez to practice pitching for two weeks and then to come back and show him. He also promised that he would give Vasquez a contract if he could throw at 92 mph during his next tryout. Randy Vasquez applied “Vitilla” pitching skills to baseball and found that he could throw curveballs. He, therefore, worked and soon was able to pitch impressively. During the next tryout, he was successful in throwing fastballs around 91-92 mph. Arturo Pena was impressed and the New York Yankees signed Randy Vasquez as an international free agent on May 21, 2018. He then started his professional career in MiLB.

Randy Vasquez, throughout his MiLB career, displayed his impressive pitching skills for teams like the GCL Yankees (Rookie), DSL Yankees, Pulaski Yankees (Rookie), Somerset Patriots (Double-A), Hudson Valley Renegades (High-A), Tampa Tarpons (Single-A), and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A). He finally arrived in the MLB on May 26, 2023, with the New York Yankees.
