Ranomi Kromowidjojo: A Brief Biography
Ranomi Kromowidjojo is a Dutch female swimmer born on 20th August 1990. She is a native of Sauwerd village of Het Hogeland in the Netherlands. Ranomi is a Freestyle specialist and represents her country in 50m and 100m Freestyles.
Background:
Ranomi Kromowidjojo was born to Rudi Kromowidjojo and Netty Deemter. She was born and brought up in Sauwerd village in Het Hogeland. Ranomi has a brother Chjanoy Kromowidjojo. Her parents ran a karate school in their hometown.
Ranomi began to swim at the age of 3 during a vacation with her family in Spain. Later, she pursued her interest in swimming. She attended a high school in her hometown, where she began to take up competitive swimming. While at high school, she competed and won medals in freestyle and butterfly events.
After graduating from high school, Ranomi Kromowidjojo joined Business School Notenboom in Eindhoven, where she did Bachelor in Business Administration. She currently trains with Arena International swim club. She is an Ambassador of UNICEF.
Rise to Glory:
Ranomi Kromowidjojo made her international debut at the 2005 European Junior Swimming Championships, where she won a Bronze medal in 50m Freestyle. The following year, she won her first senior international medal by taking home Silver in 4x100m Freestyle at the European Aquatics Championships.
In 2007, Ranomi won the Gold medal in 4x50m Freestyle at the European Swimming Championships. She would go on to clinch 17 European Swimming titles in 50m Freestyle (2010, 2013, and 2015), 100m Freestyle (2010, 2013, and 2017), 4x50m Freestyle (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2017), 50m Butterfly (2017), 4x50m Medley (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2015), 4x50m Mixed Freestyle and 4x50m Mixed Medley (2017).
Between 2008 and 2018, Ranomi Kromowidjojo had won six Gold medals in 50m Freestyle (2016 and 2020), 4x100m Freestyle (2008 and 2016), 50m Butterfly (2020), and 4x100m Mixed Freestyle (2016), seven Silver in 100m Freestyle (2016), 4x100m Freestyle (2006, 2018, and 2020), 4x100m Mixed Freestyle (2018 and 2020), and 4x100m Mixed Medley (2020), and a Bronze in 50m Freestyle (2018).
Ranomi Kromowidjojo holds world records in 50m Freestyle and 4x50m Freestyle and a national Aquatics record in 50m Butterfly and swimming records in 50m, 100m Freestyles, and 50m Butterfly.
Major Achievements:
Ranomi Kromowidjojo made her world debut at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships, where she won a Bronze medal in 4x100m Freestyle. The following year, she appeared in her debut Olympics at the London Olympics and took home a Gold medal in 4x100m Freestyle.
In 2009, Ranomi clinched the Gold medal in 4x100m Freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships. She would go on to win two World Aquatics titles in 4x100m Freestyle (2011) and 50m Freestyle (2013), eight Silver medals in 50m Freestyle (2011, 2015, and 2017), 50m Butterfly (2017 and 2019), 4x100m Freestyle (2015), and 4x100m Mixed Freestyle (2015 and 2017), and five Bronze in 100m Freestyle (2011 and 2013), 50m Butterfly (2013), and 4x100m Freestyle (2013 and 2017).
In 2012, Ranomi clinched two Gold medals in 50m and 100m Freestyle and a Silver in 4x100m Freestyle at the London Olympics. 4 years later, in 2016, she competed at the Rio Olympics but she didn’t win any medals as her Dutch team was placed 4th in 4x100m Freestyle, while she finished 5th in 100m Freestyle and 6th in 50m Freestyle.
At the World Swimming Championships, Ranomi Kromowidjojo took home 12 titles in 4x200m Freestyle (2008 and 2014), 50m Freestyle (2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018), 100m Freestyle (2010 and 2018), 4x100m Freestyle (2010 and 2014), 4x50m Freestyle (2014), and 50m Butterfly (2018).
Ranomi Kromowidjojo will compete in her fourth Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and is one of the contenders to win medals in 50m and 100m Freestyles.
