Because of his baseball fixation, Bauer faced bullying and had few friends in school. He spent the summers at a baseball camp in Texas and continued to hone his craft at Santa Clarita's William S. Hart High School.
In 2008, Bauer had a perfect 12-0 win–loss record as a junior, with a 0.79 earned run average (ERA) and a fastball that could reach 92 mph (148 km/h). Hart's final high school match was a 4–0 playoff shutout over Canyon Springs High School. Due to his lack of rapport with many of his teammates, including future Major League Baseball (MLB) star Mike Montgomery, Bauer decided to leave following his junior season.

Trevor's arm strength increased as a result of throwing coconuts with Warren. They added weight to a softball by inserting nails into it, a Nolan Ryan technique. They would also hurl balls that had been hollowed out and filled with fishing weights and sand.
In high school, Bauer started drawing interest from college scouts, and his parents ensured he could throw at the best levels. They would send him to the Texas Baseball Ranch for the summer to hone his talents. Warren and Kathy even forfeited their own vacation days.
