Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, aka Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer who was born on July 3, 1962. He is one of the highest-paid actors in the world and has won numerous honors, including three Golden Globe Awards, an honorary Palme d'Or, and four Academy Award nominations. He is one of the highest-earning movie stars of all time, with over $4 billion in North American box office earnings and over $11.1 billion worldwide.

However, he has also sparked controversy in the 2000s with his criticisms of psychiatry and anti-depressants, his attempts to spread Scientology in Europe, and a leaked video interview in which he was seen endorsing the Church of Scientology.

What has Tom Cruise been up to recently?

It was announced in May 2020 that Cruise would star in and produce a film that was shot in space. Doug Liman will co-produce, direct, and write the film. In a future Axiom Space mission, both will travel to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Dragon 2 rocket.

In May 2021, in response to the controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), specifically its lack of diversity (specifically, no black members) and ethical concerns related to financial benefits to some of its members, Cruise protested against the HFPA by returning all three of his Golden Globe Awards.

Cruise recurred as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the 2022 movie Top Gun: Maverick, which he also executive produced. Cruise received an Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where the movie had its world premiere. When the movie came out, it received a lot of positive reviews from critics, who thought it was better than the previous one. The movie became the highest-grossing movie of his career after it broke numerous box office records and earned over $1 billion upon release.

Cruise also reprised his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and while it was a box office disappointment, the film did receive critical acclaim with many praising it for the performances, storyline and more. The second part of the film is set to be released in 2025 with Cruise a producer on both films.

When was Tom Cruise converted to Scientology?

Mimi Rogers, his first wife, converted Cruise to Scientology in 1986, and by the 2000s, he was a vocal supporter of the Church of Scientology. His participation in the group was exposed by the tabloid Star in 1990, and in a 1992 interview with Barbara Walters, he openly acknowledged being a Scientologist.

Seven years after Cruise began studying Scientology, the organization's leaders allegedly made a promise to divulge Scientology secrets, including those of the prophet Xenu, according to Janet Reitman's book "Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion."

Reitman's book claims that Cruise "freaked out" and backed away. Until 1999, when David Miscavige sent Marty Rathbun to successfully "retrieve" Cruise and persuade him to continue training, Cruise withdrew from the church and worked on the movie "Eyes Wide Shut." After a few years, Cruise had developed into a full-fledged zealot.

David Miscavige, chairman of the Scientology organization, is friends with Cruise. Early on, Cruise struggled with dyslexia, and he has claimed that Scientology, in particular the L. Ron Hubbard Study Tech assisted him in overcoming the condition.
