The man who has given us endless laughter pangs through Friends has suffered a lot due to addiction in real life. His addiction to Vicodin began after a jet ski accident in 1997. This led to alcohol abuse. This addiction then led to him being hospitalized with pancreatitis in 2000. Perry revealed that he used to shake and sweat on the set while going through detox due to which fans began noticing the weight fluctuations he was going through in the show.

Even though Matthew took help in 1997 for his addiction, he got sober for a short period before once returning to his addiction. Later, in February 2001 he finally decided to put a full stop to the addiction and seek help. After serving two and a half months in rehab, Matthew returned to acting. Later in 2013, Matthew opened up the Perry House, a sober living home for men in Malibu with the beautiful intention of helping others who suffer from addiction.

In 2018, Matthew was rushed to the hospital and spent 3 months there due to gastrointestinal perforation. In 2022 he announced that he was embarking on a new journey by writing a memoir named, 'Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. Before the release, the actor opened up on the near-death experience he faced after experiencing a colon burst from opioid overuse.

During an interview with People, Matthew revealed that "The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live," "I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that's called a Hail Mary. No one survives that."

Matthew continued and said, "My therapist said, 'The next time you think about taking Oxycontin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,'" he added, "And a little window opened, and I crawled through it and I no longer want Oxycontin anymore."

Perry revealed that he had 14 stomach surgeries and the scars from the server act as a motivation to stay sober.

Matthew first dated Yasmine Bleeth in 1995. He later dated American actress Julia Roberts from 1995 to 1996. Then he dated Lizzy Caplan in 2006; however, things didn't work out with her and they both broke up in 2012.

Matthew then dated Molly Hurwitz and got engaged to her in November 2020, but in the following year, he announced that he had called off the engagement with Molly and wished her the best.
