Overview

At its heart, Demonfall is an action RPG with plenty of variation depending on the path you choose. A great example of diverging paths comes early on when you are tasked with seeking revenge against the presumed killer of your family. If you win, you will become a part of the Demon Slayer Corps, whereas losing paves the path to becoming a Demon.

The game’s combat is as much about mastering its mechanics as it is about increasing your stats. Slay enemies to level up and become stronger and learn special combat arts to improve your effectiveness in battle. As you progress through the game, you will unlock a slew of options that open a whole new world of character builds.

Additionally, the game includes light survival mechanics, which you must be mindful of while exploring the world. If ignored, you will receive a stat debuff or reduce your HP, putting you at a severe disadvantage for battles to come.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Basic Combat: This game features a combo-based combat system that works hand-in-hand with a Stamina system. Use a mix of light and heavy attacks to launch a combo and deplete the enemy’s HP pool while keeping your stamina topped off. Press the dodge button to avoid their assault and use the Block button to block or parry their attacks. Once your attacks take them down, use the Execute button to finish them off.
  • Combat Arts: Depending on your chosen faction, you can choose between Breathing Styles and Demon Arts. Both combat mechanics function dissimilarly and will lead to a significantly different character build.
  • Survival Mechanics: Besides your HP and Stamina bars, you must be mindful of your Hunger meter and, for Slayers, the Breath bar. Your hunger builds up the longer you spend without eating something, eventually causing your health pool to deplete. Slayer players must keep the Breath bar topped off by using the breathe button, which will allow them to use various breathing styles.
  • Leveling System: As is a tradition in RPGs, this title features an experience-based leveling system. Defeating foes grants you experience, which is reflected in the Experience bar. Collect enough experience to level up, gain a boost in your base stats, and earn a skill point to unlock abilities. Note that death results in losing 25% of the currently owned experience.
  • Level Cap: There is a limit to the maximum level you can reach in Demonfall. By default, it is capped at level 50, but you can use the Prestige mechanic to raise it to 100 instead. Each Prestige rank resets your character completely, but it also reduces the level-up XP requirement by 20%, making it easier to break through your previous limit.
  • Story Mode: You have access to two branching story paths: a demon’s or a slayer’s. The story mode can be broken up into individual quests, completing which reward you with Yen and XP. This is the primary game mode for Demonfall and you will likely spend most of your time exploring the story it tells.
  • In-Game Economy: Yen is the primary currency of the game and can be used to purchase most items in the game. Food, fast travel, outfits, training, black market items, and forges all require Yen and you can earn it by completing story mode quests.
  • Families: Families are the game’s clan system that offers passive stat bonuses to the player. Obtaining a family is all about chance, as the game has a gacha-like system that randomly grants you one of the 22 available clans. These families are segregated based on their rarities, which include Legendary, Rare, Uncommon, and Common clans.

Playable Races

  • Three Playable Races: Depending on the outcome of the first battle in the game, you can either become a Slayer, a Demon, or a Hybrid. Becoming a Slayer compels you to defeat the Demon while becoming one requires you to be defeated by the enemy. Hybrids, on the other hand, are Slayers who choose to become Demons later on.
  • Skill Trees: Each playable race has access to a skill tree that enhances their abilities through skill points. Skill points can be obtained through level-ups, making them a part of the core gameplay loop.
  • Demons: Demons are masters of unholy powers and have built their own society at the Demon Hideout. They have access to unique powers known as Blood Demon Arts (BDA), which are supremely effective in combat. Currently, there are 11 BDAs to choose from in the game.
  • Slayers: Slayers are humans who have vowed to put a stop to the tyranny of the Demons. They can master combat arts known as Breathing Styles, which enhance their efficacy while wielding a blade. So far, the game includes 13 Breathing Styles with varying combat effectiveness to master.
  • Hybrids: Hybrids are a mixture of Slayer and Demon combat abilities, hence the name. They gain access to warped versions of Breathing Styes, making them incredibly versatile in combat. However, you cannot access BDAs as a Hybrid.
