As mentioned earlier, Murder Mystery V randomly assigns you one of three roles: Sheriff, Killer, or Innocent. The number of Sheriffs and Killers is limited to one per match, while the rest of the players on the server are designated the Innocent role. While each player knows their role, they won’t know the others’ unless they are spotted doing something specific to their objective.

Each role has a specific objective, with that of the Innocents being the simplest to grasp: survive. Innocents can run around, collect coins, and try their hardest not to get caught by the Killer. Since the number of Innocents is always higher than the Killer, the chances of surviving are decent in every game.

On the flip side, the Sheriff plays the role of a detective, who must snuff out the Killer using their gun. Since the Killer can’t be identified by looks alone, the Sheriff is required to catch them in the act before they gun them down. Sheriffs are penalized for killing an innocent, making it important to use their weapons judiciously.

The Killer’s mission is to eliminate everyone. They are given a knife to complete this task, with no ranged options to speak of. So, they must get closer to their victims if they are to fulfill their mission without being caught.

While the Innocents can’t do much about a Killer attacking them, the Sheriff can shoot the Murderer down. That’s why it’s essential for the Murderer to remain hidden for the duration of the match and pick their victims wisely.

Each round in this title lasts just over a couple of minutes, making matches quick and rotating roles fairly quickly. If a player is not chosen to be a Killer for long, the odds mount up over time, which can be seen in the role selection pop-up.

The game features three distinct game modes: Standard, Assassin, and Disguises. Standard mode is where you play the classic Murder Mystery experience as described earlier.

Assassin mode gives every player the ability to wield a knife and hunt the target down. This mode rewards winners with alternate XP, Coins, and more. Players can freely use cosmetics like Radios, Pets, and more in such matches.

As for the Disguises mode, players are locked into the first-person perspective, and their avatars are disguised as various objects. The Murderer and Sheriff in this mode must identify each player correctly and try to fulfill their designated roles. Upon winning, the victors are rewarded with XP and Coins.

XP works differently for each role. Sheriffs earn more XP for eliminating the Killer, while the Killer gains XP bonuses for eliminating every player on the server. The Innocents earn more experience points for surviving for a long time.

This incentivizes strategic gameplay for each role, making it important for every player to try and fulfill their objective as effectively as possible. The more XP they earn, the faster they can unlock new items in the shop.
