The primary way of escaping a monster is to let the timer run out, which can be sped up by completing objectives. Finishing one such quest shortens the timer duration by a small amount, improving the chances of survival.

You also get access to a temporary upgrade tree in the Shop menu, which improves your base stats and gives them basic perks.
