Maryland Betting Laws & Guide

In November of 2020, Marylanders voted to approve sports betting, meaning it was legal in the state. It was seen as a monumental step forward, but the road since has been slow and bumpy. While you can place bets in Maryland, it hasn’t rolled out in the way residents imagined it would.

Is sports betting legal in Maryland?

Sports betting is legal in Maryland, but since December 2021, you can make a bet in Maryland at a physical site. However, as of the beginning of November 2022, the director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced that mobile sports betting is live on November 23rd, 2022. In addition, up to 10 sportsbook bigwigs launched just a day before Thanksgiving.

What betting sites are legal in Maryland?

Currently, no betting sites are legal in Maryland although sports betting is legal in Maryland. There are several sportsbooks positioned to open in Maryland when mobile betting goes live.

FanDuel

FanDuel already has a presence in Maryland thanks to their daily fantasy sports option. With a retail location in Live! Casino, it seems like FanDuel will be one of the first sportsbooks to launch an app when allowed to.

BetMGM

Unsurprisingly, MGM National Harbor has a retail BetMGM sportsbook located inside of it. BetMGM is another major player in the sports betting world and has a foot in Maryland already.

DraftKings

Just like FanDuel, DraftKings daily fantasy has been available in Maryland for years now. DraftKings doesn’t have a retail location in the state, but an official partnership with the Baltimore Ravens, the state’s most popular sports team, seems like a strong indication that they’ll launch their app there as soon as possible.

BetRivers

BetRivers opened the first retail sportsbook in Maryland that wasn’t in a casino. Rivers Casinos has a strong presence in neighboring Pennsylvania, so don’t be surprised if BetRivers becomes a mobile option.

Caesars

Another sportsbook with a retail option in Maryland, Caesars occupies Horseshoe Casino. Caesars Sportsbook doesn’t miss many states, so Maryland probably won’t be an exception.

PointsBet

Although they’re Australian, PointsBet has a partnership with the University of Maryland, a strong tie to the state. They don’t have a retail location, but the connection with the marquee college of the state bodes well for their future in Maryland sports betting.

Maryland Sports Betting Tips

Learn the Ropes

Betting on things you don’t understand is a bad idea. Make sure you learn what you’re betting on and what you’re rooting for before placing any wager down.

Money Management

You should always be aware of how much you’re betting, how much you can afford to bet, and your wallet in general. If you are having trouble, don’t be afraid to quit or seek help, as that may be a sign of addiction.

Be Smart

While you may want the Terps to go undefeated and win the Big Ten every season, it’s an unrealistic goal for even the most talented teams. Try to maintain responsibility with your decision-making when betting, especially on favorite teams.

Maryland Sports Betting Tax Rates

If you win at least $600 from sports betting, that will be taxed. No matter if it was one big bet or a series of smaller ones, if the total won exceeds $600, it will be taxed. Federally, money won by gambling is taxed at 24%. Losses from sports betting can also be deducted as an itemized deduction, but you can’t deduct more in losses than your reported winnings.

Is DraftKings sports betting legal in Maryland?
