Alex De Minaur was born on 17 February 1999 to father Anibal de Minaur and mother Esther de Minaur in Sydney, Australia.

His father is an entrepreneur, who owned an Italian restaurant on George Street in Sydney. The restaurant was located in one of the busiest parts of the city, close to the city center. Anibal first met his wife Esther at his restaurant as she signed up to work at the fine dining place as a waitress.

The duo got married soon after their first interaction and took care of their restaurant business for over two decades. De Minaur’s parents always encouraged him to participate in sports and extracurricular activities. The Australian spent his first five years in Sydney before relocating to Alicante, Spain as his father agreed to take up a new business opportunity.

Alex De Minaur completed most of his education in Spain, but the family returned to Sydney at the age of 13. The 25-year-old still holds dual citizenship as his mother is of Spanish descent. He has represented Spain in junior tournaments as well, however he always felt more close to being an Australian than a Spaniard.

De Minaur’s family faced a huge financial crisis in 2011; so severe that his tennis career was put on hold. The Australian’s father could not afford his son’s travel and tennis coaching expenses. However, his then coach Adolfo Gutierez saved the day by not accepting any fee for his coaching and made sure Minaur developed his tennis skills.
