Tessa guided her son and developed his overall game. She was one of the first people to notice Shapovalov's one-handed backhand. However, as Shapovalov grew older, it became difficult for his mother to handle his coaching and also manage her tennis academy. She hired Adriano Fuorivia, a former manager of tennis development in Canada to be Shapovalov’s personal coach.

Fuorivia traveled with Shapovalov to junior ITF and Grand Slam tournaments and achieved significant success with the teenager. Shapovalov won the 2015 US Open boys doubles title and also captured the 2016 Wimbledon Junior Singles title under Fuoriva’s guidance. The Canadian also went on to make history by winning the 2015 Junior Davis Cup while representing Canada alongside teammates Felix Auger-Aliassime and Benjamin Sigounin.
