Jelena Ostapenko is a Latvian tennis player who was born on June 8, 1997. She has won eight WTA singles titles as of March 2025, including the 2017 French Open, where she defeated former world No. 1 Simona Halep in the final. She achieved her career-best singles of No. 5 in 2018 and is ranked No. 25 by the WTA as of March 2025. The 27-year-old has also earned fame in the doubles category and has won ten WTA doubles titles, including the 2024 US Open where she won her first doubles major alongside Lyudmyla Kichenok. Apart from this, her best Grand Slam record in the doubles category is seen at the 2025 and 2024 Australian Open, where she reached the finals. She, along with Lyudmyla Kichenok, defeated the reigning US Open champion Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in the semifinals. The pair lost to second seed Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei in straight sets in the finals. She secured a spot in her second consecutive Australian Open final in 2025 with Hsieh Su-Wei, where they lost to the team of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 6-7, 6-3).

Ostapenko lifted her tenth WTA doubles title at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Open with Ellen Perez by registering a win over Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai in straight sets. She reached the final of the 2025 Qatar Open (losing to Amanda Anisimova) in singles and the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships (losing to Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend with Hsieh Su-wei) in doubles. Some of her other singles titles include the Eastbourne International and the Korean Open. After five years of absence, she won the 2024 Adelaide International, defeating Daria Kasatkina, Sorana Cirstea, Caroline Garcia, Marta Kostyuk, and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Ostapenko won her second WTA 500 title at the 2024 Linz Open after overcoming Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final match. She reached the quarterfinals in the singles and doubles competitions at the 2024 Italian Open. The duo of Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei defeated her and Lyudmyla Kichenok in the 2024 Madrid Open quarterfinals. Like many other WTA stars, she relies heavily on her powerful groundstrokes to overhaul anybody who stands in her path. A drawback to the Latvian is the fact that her temperament can occasionally get the better of her, leading to some rash decisions. "Penko" has won the WTA tour Breakthrough of the Month Award twice and the Latvian Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2017.
