His idol growing up was former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Thompson won the Masters doubles title with Sebastian Korda at the 2024 Madrid Open, defeating top seed Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden en route. He became the first male player from Australia to win the Madrid Open.

Thompson won his maiden ATP singles title at the 2024 Los Cabos Open, defeating Casper Ruud in the final. He defeated Alexander Zverev in the semifinal by playing his longest match in the history of the tournament. He also emerged victorious in the doubles category with Max Purcell.

Thompson made his professional tennis debut in 2013. He made his grand slam debut at the Australian Open in 2014 and won his first grand slam main draw match in 2016 at the French Open against Laslo Djere.
