29-year-old Maria Sakkari is a professional tennis player from Greece. She is ranked No. 8 by the WTA as of July 2024. Sakkari achieved her career-high ranking of world No. 3 on March 21, 2022, becoming the highest-ranked Greek tennis player in history alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Maria Sakkari has won two WTA singles titles in her career so far, including the WTA 1000 title at the Guadalajara Open in 2023. In 2021, she reached the semifinals at the French Open and US Open, making her the first Greek woman tennis player to reach a Grand Slam semi-final.

Maria Sakkari was born on July 25, 1995 to Angeliki Kanellopoulou and Konstantinos Sakkaris in Athens, Greece. She comes from a tennis background as her mother and grandfather were both professional tennis players and was introduced to tennis by her parents at the age of six. Sakkari had easy access to tennis as a young child and often visited her mother’s practice sessions. After honing her skills in her hometown during her early teenage years, she moved to Barcelona, Spain at the age of 18 in search of more competition and developed her skill set from experienced coaches.

Sakkari made her WTA tour debut at the US Open in 2015. Since then, the 29-year-old has won two titles in her career, including the 2019 Morocco Open, and the 2023 Guadalajara Open.

Konstantinos Sakkaris is Maria Sakkari’s father. He has been extremely supportive of his daughter's tennis career since she was a young girl and often drove her to practice sessions in her hometown Greece. Sakkaris also spoke with sponsorship providers to make sure his daughter availed the best resources for her tennis. Sakkari turned professional in 2015 and was coached by American Tom Hill, one of the youngest coaches in the WTA, who also assisted former Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins.

Hill was close to choosing a career in advertising but his stint with Collins led him to becoming a full-time coach. Sakkari became the first Greek woman to become a two-time semifinalist at a Grand Slam tournament (at the 2021 French Open and the 2021 US Open) and also reached a career-high ranking of World No. 3 under the guidance of Tom Hill.

Angeliki Kanellopoulou is Maria Sakkari’s mother.
