22-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal is a professional tennis player from Spain, born on June 3, 1986, in Manacor, Spain. Nadal is one of the most decorated tennis players in the history of the game. He has won 92 ATP singles titles in his career, including 22 grand slams, and 36 Masters 1000 titles. He also won two Olympic gold medals, one in singles (2008 Beijing Olympics) and one in doubles (2016 Rio Olympics). Nadal is one of the three players, who completed the career Golden Slam.

Nadal was one of the most successful teenagers in the man's tennis history. He won 16 titles, (including one grand slam and six Masters 1000 titles), and became world No. 2, before turning 20.

Nadal announced his retirement from professional tennis on October 10, 2024. The 2024 Davis Cup finals will be the tournament where Nadal will say goodbye to tennis. In his final Davis Cup match, he was defeated by Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, losing by 6-4, 6-4.

He also competed in the 6 Kings Slam in Riyadh, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. In his farewell speech, Nadal thanked his fans for their unwavering support and acknowledged that, while he still loves the sport, his body can no longer sustain the demands of professional tennis.

Rafael Nadal was born on June 3, 1986, to father Sebastian Nadal Homar and mother Ana Maria Parera Femenias in Manacor, a town on the island of Mallorca in Spain. As per reports, his father is a successful businessman in Mallorca, owning an insurance company, a glass and window company, and also a restaurant called the Sa Punta.

Nadal’s mother was a housewife before his parents chose to get separated in 2009. The Spaniard’s family belongs to a sporting background and hence sports has had a huge influence on Nadal as a young boy. His uncle Miguel Angel Nadal was a professional football player and played for clubs like Mallorca and FC Barcelona.

Nadal took a lot of interest in football early into his teenage years and also played the sport quite frequently in his hometown. He visited the Barcelona Football Club stadium, Camp Nou as a child and got special access to the dressing room due to his uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal’s involvement with the club. He also managed to meet his childhood idol Brazilian football sensation Ronaldo Nazario.

However, it was Nadal’s second uncle Toni Nadal who introduced him to tennis at the age of three. Toni Nadal developed his nephew’s skills as a young professional and coached him for more than 15 years.

Nadal received an offer from the Spanish Tennis Federation to train at an advanced center in Barcelona but Toni Nadal and Sebastian Nadal turned down the request. As a teenager, Nadal had to cover his own expenses to train with the best possible resources, and all costs were covered by his father Sebastian Nadal.
