The Texas Open, a professional golf competition on the PGA Tour that is held close to San Antonio, Texas, is also known as the Valero Texas Open for sponsorship purposes. It was originally known as the Texas Open in 1922, 102 years ago. In 2002, Valero Energy Corporation, based in San Antonio, assumed branding rights. Northeast of the city is The Oaks Course at the TPC San Antonio, where it is played. The Valero Texas Open is organised and hosted by the Valero Energy Foundation.

Valero Texas Open 2024 History

Since 2017, Wasserman Media Group has been in charge of the event. Tommy Armour III set a 72-hole PGA Tour scoring record there in 2003 with a score of 254. This tournament has been won by many well-known players, such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, and Arnold Palmer, who took home the trophy three times in a row. It has long been thought of as a competition where scoring low is comparatively simple. Every event winner since 1934 has had a score below par.

It is the third-oldest PGA Tour event, the sixth-oldest professional golf tournament globally, and the longest to be conducted in the same place. It has always been played in the San Antonio region. With the exception of 1927–1928, when it was contested at Willow Springs Golf Course, it was hosted at Brackenridge Park Golf Course from its founding until 1940. The event travelled from Brackenridge Park to Willow Springs (1941–1949). It was played at the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Course and Brackenridge Park in 1950 and 1951. From then on, it was held at Brackenridge Park until 1956 and 1960, when it was moved back to Ft. Sam Houston.

From 1961 to 1966, Oak Hills Country Club served as the host; from 1967 to 1970, Pecan Valley Golf Club hosted. 1968 saw no event because the PGA Championship was held in July at Pecan Valley. The competition was played at Woodlake Golf Club for five editions (1972–1976), then moved back to Oak Hills (1977–1994).

From 1995 until 2009, it was hosted at the Resort Course at La Cantera Golf Club. In 2010, it moved to its current location on TPC San Antonio's The Oaks Course, which is located in the affluent Cibolo Canyon enclave. Initially scheduled for September or October, the Texas Open was moved to the Fall Series in 2007 and 2008. The tournament has led the PGA Tour each year in philanthropic contributions since Valero took over as title sponsor in 2002. The Valero Texas Open, held in 2015, was the fourth PGA Tour tournament to surpass the $100 million mark in charitable revenue raising. A record-breaking $16 million was raised for charity during the 2021 Valero Texas Open, pushing the total to over $187 million.

2019 saw the Valero Texas Open revert to taking place before The Masters, which resulted in NBC taking over weekend coverage from CBS. The 2020 Valero Texas Open was cancelled three weeks before it was scheduled to take place because of the COVID-19 epidemic. It was rescheduled for the week before The Masters in 2021.

Valero Texas Open 2024 leaderboard

At the Valero Texas Open, Akshay Bhatia overcame a remarkable challenge from Denny McCarthy to secure a playoff victory and a trip to the Masters. After jumping out to a six-shot lead, American prodigy Bhatia appeared sure to win, but McCarthy, who began the tournament four back on 11-under, put up a stunning 28 on the back nine. After making seven consecutive birdies, including one at the 72nd hole, McCarthy—who has yet to win on the PGA Tour—finished with a -20, forcing Bhatia to make a crucial putt to force a playoff.
