The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Canada and play as a part of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1971 by W.D.”Wild Bill” Hunter and Dr.Chuck Allard as the Alberta Oilers and played their first season in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA). However, they changed their name to the Edmonton Oilers the following season and stayed in the WHA until 1979, when the WHA merged with the NHL, gaining them entry in the most elite hockey league around the globe.

Presently, the team plays its home games at Rogers Place, which opened in 2016.
