
John Tavares is a professional ice hockey forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs and serves as an alternate captain. He was drafted first overall by the New York Islanders in 2009, playing for them for nine seasons and leading as captain for five years. Before joining the NHL, Tavares was granted exceptional status to enter the OHL early, where he played for the Oshawa Generals and London Knights.
On the international stage, Tavares has represented Canada at five IIHF-sanctioned events. He participated in the 2010 and 2011 World Championships and the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in 2008 and 2009. In the Junior Ice Hockey Championships, he was named the most valuable player in 2009 after scoring eight goals and 15 points in six games.
