John Tavares is a Canadian hockey forward who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs as an alternate captain. He was the first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, where he played for nine seasons, serving as captain for five.

Before joining the NHL, Tavares played at the major junior level for the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was traded to the London Knights during the 2009 OHL trading deadline. Tavares gained exceptional player status at 14, allowing him to enter the OHL Priority Draft in 2005. He was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Rookie of the Year in 2006 and the CHL Player of the Year in 2007. Tavares was the center of an attempt to change the NHL's draft rules so he could participate in the 2008 Entry Draft. He was also targeted for eligibility to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a 17-year-old in 2007. Leading up to the 2009 Draft, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and International Scouting Services ranked him as the top prospect.
