Born on May 13, 1992, he was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round as the 17th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Before the NHL, Stone began his career with the Manitoba Midget 'AAA' Hockey League before transitioning to the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Brandon Wheat Kings, where he played for four seasons before joining the Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL) to begin his professional hockey career.

Stone made his debut for the Senators in the 2011-12 season, specifically in Game 5 of the first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers, assisting on the game-winning goal scored by Jason Spezza. At the 2019 trade deadline, he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights and has been regarded as one of the premier two-way forwards in the NHL in present times.
