The New Jersey Devils are a professional ice hockey team. They compete in the NHL's Metropolitan Division. Founded in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts, the team moved to Denver in 1976, becoming the Colorado Rockies, before relocating to New Jersey in 1982 and adopting their current name. The team played in East Rutherford's Brendan Byrne Arena for 25 years before moving to Prudential Center in Newark in 2007.
Initially struggling, the Devils' fortunes changed after Lou Lamoriello became general manager in 1987. From 1988 to 2012, they made the playoffs consistently, winning three Stanley Cups (1995, 2000, 2003) and reaching the finals five times. The Devils have a storied rivalry with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. They are the only major sports team to represent New Jersey exclusively since 2012.
