In Photos: Chris Tanev surprises young fans by signing jerseys at Toronto Maple Leafs hockey school

New Toronto Maple Leafs signing Chris Tanev seems en route to becoming a fan favorite among the Toronto faithful. The former Dallas Stars defenceman was sighted signing jerseys of young Maple Leafs fans on Thursday, just days after completing a move to the Maple Leafs.

Given the developmental stages of his career that came through his home in Ontario, Tanev would be one of the most influential role models to the young fans looking up to Maple Leafs heroes. The Leafs Hockey Development, a grassroots-level hockey academy for young and developing athletes, had a few visitors off late.

Apart from Tanev, Maple Leafs mascot Carlton the Bear was spotted humoring the young crowd. PWHL Toronto forward Emma Maltais also made an appearance at the meet and greet.

The recent trade of Tanev to the Toronto Maple Leafs was no surprise. He was pursued by several teams heading into the ensuing offseason, including the likes of the Maple Leafs.

Tanev, who was acquired by the Stars earlier this year, was always going to be hard to hold on to. With him set to be a free agent on July 1, the team did all in their power to retain the superstar. However, the Maple Leafs' offer was just too good to turn down.

The Dallas-based franchise received a 2026 seventh-round pick and Max Ellis in exchange for Tanev. Ellis is due a contract extension after showing signs of promise with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, scoring 14 points this season.

Chris Tanev had an impressive season with the Stars, taking them all the way to the Western Conference Final before bowing out to eventual Stanley Cup finalists Edmonton Oilers.

It will be interesting to see which side eventually comes out with the better deal among the Stars and the Maple Leafs. The addition of Tanev can take the already star-studded Maple Leafs line-up to another level, while the Stars will be benefiting from a player they could have lost for free.
