Paul Maurice is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He began his coaching career with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes in 1995 and continued until 2003 before joining he Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006 and later returning for a second spell at Carolina. Maurice later coached the Winnipeg Jets from January 2014 to December 2021 before being appointed head coach of the Florida Panthers in June 2022. Throughout his coaching tenure, Maurice has achieved several milestones, including becoming the youngest coach in NHL history to reach 1,000 games at age 43. Maurice also holds various franchise records, including the Winnipeg Jets franchise record for games coached (600) and wins (315). He is also one of three coaches to earn at least 300 wins with two franchises. Moreover, twice in his career, he has led teams to the Stanley Cup Finals. The first being with the Hurricanes in 2002 and the then leading the Florida Panthers in 2023.
Maurice's coaching career started after a four-year stint as a defenseman in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he played with the Windsor Compuware Spitfires. Remarkably, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft but never played for them.
