List of Olympic Medalists of Team USA in Athletics

Track and field, also known as athletics, was one of the first Olympic events, having been held since the ancient Olympics took place. Athletics has been the most widely reported event on the Olympic schedule since the games were revived in 1896 as the modern Olympics. Established in July 1912 in Stockholm, the World Athletics (WA) oversees the sport on a global scale.

Women competed in athletics for the first time at the 1928 Olympics and have done so ever since. Though women could only compete in a small number of events at first, their program now offers nearly equal opportunities as men. The women's program differs primarily in that they compete in the heptathlon instead of the men's decathlon and that the women's high hurdles event is held over a different distance (100 m vs. 110 m for men).

The U.S.A. has won a staggering 828 medals in Athletics at the Olympics in the past, making it the most successful country in the sport in Olympic history. With 344 gold medals, 270 silver medals and 214 bronze medals, the USA leads the sport by a wide margin.
