A form of basketball, 3x3, is played in a half-court configuration with a single backboard per team. Though less formal, 3x3 basketball has been played for a long time in gyms and on the streets throughout the world.
Due in large part to the Gus Macker and Hoop It Up tournament series, which hosted nationwide games involving teams and players of all skill levels, 3x3 game regulations began to become standard throughout the United States in the late 2000s.
The biggest competition for national 3x3 teams is the FIBA 3x3 World Cups for both men and women. To establish 3x3 as a stand-alone sport with its own format and tournaments, FIBA started a comprehensive campaign, and at the 2020 Summer Olympics, it made its Olympic debut.

The Year-by-Year List of Olympic Medalists of Team USA in Basketball 3x3
The sport, basketball 3x3, made its Olympic debut in the most recent Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, and in their debut, Team USA’s men’s team didn’t qualify, but the women’s team won a gold medal with athletes Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young.
The team won all but one of its games, finishing with a 6-1 record entering the knockout round. They defeated France 18–16 in the semifinals to set up a gold medal match with the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). The United States team prevailed 18–15 in that game to take home the first-ever gold medal in an Olympic 3x3 basketball event.
Even though the women's 3x3 squad boasted four WNBA stars and college players who had won national championships, they still had to overcome the setback of losing Katie Lou Samuelson due to a positive COVID test.
For Plum personally, the win was quite satisfying, because even after being the all-time leading scorer in college women's basketball history, she was never able to secure a national title in her college days.
