In 1933, Europe gave birth to canoe slalom racing in Switzerland, and the inaugural World Championships took place in 1949. The sport is about a decked canoe or kayak that must be maneuvered through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on river rapids in the quickest amount of time to win.
The sport debuted at the 1972 Olympics in Munich but was dropped for other iterations, only to return at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Officially known as canoe slalom, but because of the frothy whitewater currents created by the course's rapids, it's more commonly termed whitewater canoeing. Both kayaks (Kx) and Canadian canoes (Cx) are used in slalom canoe tournaments.
The Internationale Repräsentantenschaft Kanusport (IRK) was established in 1924 in München, Germany, to oversee canoe slalom internationally; however, 22 years later, it was succeeded by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) in 1946 in Stockholm.
At the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the program was balanced for men and women, with only the K1 and C1 events available to each gender. Before this canoe slalom, Olympic events were divided into K1 for women and K1, C1, and C2 for men.
Interestingly, canoe slalom events are not held on the natural tides but are usually constructed artificially. Albeit, there was an exception to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when the canoe slalom event was held in the Ocoee River's natural rapids in northern Georgia and southern Tennessee.
