In 2016, skateboarding was accepted as a new sport for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was played in two disciplines, street and park, by both men and women. It was one of the four sports added to the Olympic schedule. The other sports were sport climbing, surfing, and karate. Following the Tokyo Games, the IOC Program Commission reevaluated the sport's provisional place on the Olympic Program and added further for the 2024 Paris Olympics as well.
For a sport to be part of the Olympic schedule, it must have an international governing body; however, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected the International Skateboarding Federation's (ISF) involvement with scheduling. Thus, in late 2017, a merger took place between the ISF and the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) to form the World Skate, recognized by the IOC.

Since Olympic skateboarding debuted in the 2020 Summer Olympics, there hasn't been a long list of NOC champions; regardless, Japan is leading the medal table with five total medals, including three golds. The United States, on the other hand, has a total of two bronze medals in men's skateboarding’s park and street disciplines.
The list of Olympic medalists for Team USA in skateboarding is as follows:
Year | Event | Athlete(s) | Medal |
2020 | Street, Men | Jagger Eaton | Bronze |
2020 | Park, Men | Cory Juneau | Bronze |
American skateboarders Jagger Eaton and Cory Juneau were among the first Olympic skateboarding champions at the 2020 Summer Olympics and introduced skateboarding as a sport to a global audience. As per Team USA's report, it was the performance, tricks, and spirit of these players that made the premiere of the sport so successful.
Eaton, a 20-year-old from Mesa, Arizona, made history by becoming the first skateboarder from the United States to win an Olympic medal. His mother, Shelly Schaerer, was a gymnastics team member for the United States in the 1980s, and she co-owned a gymnastics school with her husband, Geoff Eaton.
Eaton explained that his life changed when he was four years old and his father gave him a skateboard. After that, he and his brother got hooked on the sport, so much so that they used to build ramps wherever they could find space.
In men's park skateboarding, 22-year-old Juneau took home the bronze medal. The San Diego native told reporters that his friends refer to him as a "sleepy turtle" because of how laidback he is. Further, Juneau was thrilled for Australian gold medalist Keegan Palmer, who is like a younger brother to him since they both grew up skating together.
