Wrestling has been contested at the Olympics since the BCE era Olympic Games in Greece and has also been a part of every modern Olympic schedule, with the exception of the 1900 Olympic Games. Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling are the two disciplines that fall within its purview; though there are others too, they are contested as separate sports. Originally, there was only Greco-Roman, but freestyle was added in 1920.

In freestyle wrestling, holds can be applied to any region of the body and are essentially limitless as long as they pose no threat, while in Greco-Roman wrestling, holds restrict the upper body's grips. The governing body for wrestling is the 1921 formed, United World Wrestling (UWW), which was originally, the International Amateur Wrestling Federation (IAWF). On the all-time medal table for wrestling, which includes 65 NOCs, the United States leads in the total number of medals, with 142, but falls second in the total number of gold medals, with 57, to the Soviet Union, which has 62 golds, and 116 medals.

The difference in the gold medals makes all the difference in the standings, and so the Soviet Union is in the lead. Regardless, Japan stands in third place with a total of 76 medals and 37 golds.
