History of the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship

WWE has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1963, yet it traditionally lacked in introducing titles for the female division apart from the usual world titles. The gap has begun to close in the past few years with WWE first introducing the tag team titles for NXT and the main roster. In 2024, the promotion introduced multiple titles to bring the count of female titles almost to par with that of the male roster.

In 2024, the WWE introduced the NXT Women’s North American Championship, which was the first secondary title introduced for the female division. This was aimed at showcasing female talent on WWE's developmental brand. Over the next few months, WWE also introduced the WWE Speed Women’s Championship for fast-paced action and the WWE Women’s Crown Jewel Champion to crown the best of the best.

Following this, the WWE Women's United States Championship was unveiled for the SmackDown brand in November 2024. After Nick Aldis unveiled the title for SmackDown, fans were waiting for Adam Pearce to introduce a secondary female title for the red brand. They expected it to be a counterpart of the much-loved Intercontinental Champion. Pearce did not disappoint and revealed the Women’s Intercontinental Championship on the November 25, 2024, episode of RAW.

Championship Design

The design of the Women's Intercontinental Championship closely mirrors that of its male counterpart, with notable modifications that reflect its unique identity. The belt features a white strap—consistent with other women's titles—and replaces "Heavyweight" with "Women's". Additionally, like all WWE championship belts, it includes customizable side plates that can feature the champion's logo.
