An offensive tackle who has achieved a lot of success in the NFL is the Philadelphia Eagles right tackle, Lane Johnson. Born in Groveton, Texas, Johnson has been involved with the games since his high school days. However, what is inspiring from his story is that he played quarterback, tight end, and even as a defensive lineman before settling down as a member of the front five on the offensive line.

Johnson is highly regarded for his athletic ability despite his big size. Playing as a quarterback and tight end in his first few years of college, Johnson lacked the physique and strength to play on the O-line, but he hit the gym and bulked up for the position.

Even when he first started in college, Johnson was not an offensive-line player until sometime in his third year. He started his college career as a quarterback and also played tight end. He then shifted to the defensive line before being asked to consider the offensive line due to several injuries on that side of the ball.

Having just played as an offensive tackle for less than two years, Johnson was developing his game at an impressive rate and he ended up playing as both the right tackle and the left tackle. His effort and commitment to play any position up for grabs and his brilliant display as a tackle did not go unnoticed as he would be drafted in the NFL at the age of 22 in the first round with pick number 4 overall.

As of 2024, Johnson has spent a decade playing football at the highest level and now as he reaches his mid-thirties, he still has a couple of good years left in him one would imagine.

The Texas native stands at a height of 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m). Normally offensive linemen in the NFL are all quite tall and the average height for this position is 6 ft 5 which means he is just slightly taller.

There have been several instances of members on the offensive line being even as short as 6 ft 6 in or as tall as 6 ft 8 in. The variation in this position is quite big, but typically an offensive lineman needs to be large and strong for blocking purposes.

Johnson weighs approximately 325 pounds which is a good 10 pounds heavier than the average. The biggest advantage of being a heavier lineman is the ability to not get pushed around and use their strength to hold off the oncoming pass rushers.

Having a strong but well-balanced offensive tackle makes it that much harder for the D-line to force their way to the quarterback, although the flip side to this is that offensive tackles lack athleticism in return.
