The 2024 edition of the MLB draft is almost here and the fans are waiting to witness the brand-new players who will start their professional journey in the league. Taking place in Arlington, Texas, United States from July 14, 2024, to July 16, 2024, each team will get to select their choice of young and upcoming players from colleges and high schools during the event.
The draft order is the process in which the MLB draft takes place every year. It determines which team gets the first overall pick and how the draft will proceed. The draft order mainly starts with the first round and continues until the twentieth round along with Prospect Promotion, Incentive Picks, Compensation Picks and Competitive Balance Rounds A and B in between. 614 new players are being selected throughout the draft order process. These players then start their professional careers in the minor leagues before making their MLB debuts.
How is the MLB Draft Order determined?
The draft order was determined according to the rankings of the previous season until 2022. From the 2023 season onwards, a new lottery system for the draft order was chosen. The teams that did not reach the postseason in the previous season participate in the lottery. Although the worst-performing teams have increased chances of winning the lottery, all the non-postseason teams get an opportunity to get the #1 overall pick in the draft.
The lottery chooses the first six picks of the draft. The other non-playoff teams are chosen based on the reverse order of their ranking in the previous season as per foxsports.com. Then, the postseason teams are chosen according to how they were eliminated. The World Series Champion of the previous season gets to choose last in the order.
Notably, the Cleveland Guardians will get the #1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft for the first time in their history.
