Born in Montreal, Canada, and raised in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Duarte's basketball journey began under the influence of his older brother Jean Michel.

Durate showcased his offensive skill set at Northwest Florida State from 2017 to 2019. As a sophomore, he averaged 19.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, leading his team to the Elite Eight round of the NJCAA Division I Tournament. Notably, on January 23, 2020, he recorded an impressive stat line of 30 points, 11 rebounds, and eight steals in a victory over USC, becoming the first Division I player since 1999 to achieve such numbers. His exceptional performances earned him the 2021 Jerry West Award as the top shooting guard in collegiate basketball.

Selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers, Duarte made a debut for ages on October 20, 2021, scoring 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep. By doing so, he set the Pacers franchise record for the most points by a rookie on debut. In a trade on July 6, 2023, Duarte was acquired by the Sacramento Kings where he is playing as backup shooting guard.
