Vassell’s basketball journey began in Peachtree Ridge High School, Georgia, where he averaged 21.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in his senior season. He was named the regional Player of the Year.

In 2018, Vassell committed to play college ball for Florida State University. In his sophomore season, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 Emerald Coast Classic and selected to the Second Team All-ACC. Following two seasons in college, Vassell declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Vassell was selected with the 11th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in 2020. He has shown tremendous growth since his rookie season (5.1 ppg) and is now one of the main offensive players on the Spurs roster.

In the 2022/23 season for the San Antonio Spurs, Vassell played 38 games and averaged an impressive 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
