Before the NBA, Williams played college basketball for the University of Tennessee–Knoxville, where he averaged 15.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 104 appearances. He won back-to-back SEC Player of the Year awards, becoming the first player to do so since Corliss Williamson in 1995. He was also named to the First-team All-SEC twice in 2018 and 2019.
